DESCRIPTION:
Plants will dry out quicker
when in a pot. Check them frequently and water them when necessary. Tip: p
ick up the pot to test for dryness. Is it light? It may need water. Still
not sure\, double-check by inserting your finger about an inch or two into
the soil to feel for moisture. If the soil feels dry at that depth\, it’s
a good indication that the plant needs watering.

Rules: To Sub
mit a Fish Photo
\n
\n
Winning fish will be judged by the length of the fish\, and not the
weight.
\n
The total length
of the fish is defined from the lower jaw to the end of the tail pushed to
gether.
\n
The fish should b
e placed on the provided measuring board\, with the lower jaw touching the
90-degree lip at the beginning of the board\, and the tail towards the en
d of the board pinched together to measure fish total length.
\n
For a picture to be eligible it must
have the entire fish in the frame\, including the 4-digit registration co
de on the end of the board\; this code will identify the submitted catch t
o each individual registered angler and their category. For the Fly Fishin
g division the reel must be in the photo.
\n
There will be five (5) categories to register under and r
eceive winnings. No angler can win multiple categories without paying for
more than one\, and those who register for multiple categories cannot win
more than one with the same length fish.
\n
Winning catch will be judged on overall length\, and no fi
sh will be manipulated to extend length that would result in damage to the
fish.
\n
For submitted pict
ures to be eligible\, fish must be landed in waters within the following g
eographic boundaries: Massachusetts Bay\, southwest of a line from Nahant
to Race Point\, Provincetown\; with a western boundary of the South Shore
land masses and eastern boundary of the outer Cape. No fish caught west of
the breakwater of the Sandwich end of the Cape Cod Canal will be eligible
.
\n
In the event that the d
ifference in length between two or more winning fish in one category canno
t be discerned by tournament regulation committee\, committee can choose t
o divided cash prizes equally between more than one participant. Regulatio
n committee holds to right to disqualify fish photos submitted that appear
to be previously caught\, manipulated\, or caught in ways other than hook
and line.

\n
Mass
achusetts is home to an incredibly rare and rapidly vanishing ecoregion kn
own as Atlantic coastal pine barrens. Unfortunately\, pine barrens are dis
appearing due to continued development\, and some of these developments ar
e infuriatingly being done under the guise of green energy as pine forests
are being cleared to make room for temporary solar fields.
\n
While we are advocates for solar (evidenc
ed by our insistence on rooftop solar for the Drew Heritage House) we beli
eve that clearing rare habitats to make room for it is sort of missing the
point. We stand with our sister organization\, the Community Land and Wat
er Coalition\, on July 31st to say\, “no clear-cutting forests for solar”.

Hidden c
olor exists all around us\, waiting to be transformed into works of art. H
ave you ever wondered how to utilize local plant species and food compost
in a sustainable\, creative way? In this hands-on\, one day workshop at Os
amequin Farm\, dive into the realm of natural printmaking and dyeing proce
sses with Katama Murray of Teach Peace Prints. Eco printing is the proces
s of bundling and steaming plants and food waste onto either fabric or pap
er\, allowing the natural pigments to transfer to the prepared material. A
ll of the colors\, shapes\, and textures come from the materials themselve
s and bond with the fiber\, leaving synthetic colors out of the equation t
hat are harmful to both ourselves and the environment.
\n
Participants will develop a basic understandin
g of sustainable foraging\, bundling and fabric preparation techniques\, a
s well as ways in which we as stewards of the earth can bring plant spirit
s to life in the form of cloth and fiber. The process of mordanting will b
e covered briefly\, and further details will be printed and sent home with
you. This meditative process yields different results each time\, and is
a great opportunity to let go while collaborating with nature. Eco printin
g offers unique variations and a world of possibilities that allow for ful
l exploration.
\n
Create beaut
iful\, one of a kind pieces that can be admired forever\, while taking tim
e to slow down and appreciate the richness and diversity of color dwelling
alongside us. All materials will be provided including a variety of fabri
cs\, paper and natural materials to print on. Participants will bring home
a tote bag\, cotton bandana\, fabric samples\, printed papers and informa
tion to help you continue printing at home. Bringing your own found plants
\, flowers and food waste is also encouraged. Masks and social distancing
are required.

We a

Friday\, December 3 \n
\n
\n
10:30 – 12:00: Stop monocropping
food system solutions: If you wouldn’t grow that way\, why work that way?
– Register Here \nOur food and farm system is dynamic and diverse\, interconnected and in
terdependent\, but the way we approach the work within the food system is
too often siloed\, limiting innovation and stifling impact. Since the gree
n revolution began\, the risk of large scale monocrops have become ever cl
earer. We sacrifice a short term gain (vast amounts of food) for a long te
rm loss (practices that weaken our health and the environment). We have be
en monocropping our solutions to food insecurity and health too\, with sim
ilar outcomes – an overreliance on food banks and emergency surgeries\, ra
ther than a diversified diet\, an economy linked to local farms\, and a he
althcare system that recognizes food as medicine. Holistically approaching
food systems work helps foster a broadened knowledge base\, opens doors t
o strategic alliances\, invites diversity\, and decreases dependence on an
y single solution to feeding a growing population that is becoming more fo
od insecure and sick by the day. Just as we can’t feed the country on corn
and soy alone\, we can’t meet the challenges of our food system with sing
ular\, siloed solutions. Explore approaches to food systems work through a
holistic lens\, examining the challenges of and opportunities for coopera
tion across unique but aligned sectors. Discover the potential for transfo
rmative systems change within our food system when we shift to working the
way we grow – diverse\, informed\, integrated\, planned and measured.

10:30 – 12:00: The power of locally controlled food supply chains – Register Here \nJoin this
session to hear from supply chain businesses\, and nonprofit organization
s\, and researchers to better understand how food system supply chains ope
rate and where there is room for greater intervention to build a more sust
ainable\, equitable food system.
\n
1:00 – 2:30: Lessons from municipal food system policy campaigns
– Register Here \nMu
nicipalities have real power to impact how the food system operates in the
town/city through zoning\, licensing\, program operation\, and more! 2021
has brought a new crop of city councils\, town meeting members\, town man
agers\, and mayors. Learn how to effectively build a coalition and engage
municipal leaders to create policy change at the municipal level. \n<

\n
\n
10:30 – 12:00: Farming in the face of climate change – Register Here \nPanelis
ts will outline key climate change impacts on local agriculture and existi
ng strategies\, programs\, and policies that help local farmers deal with
them. Participants will discuss strategies\, programs and policies that mi
ght be needed to ensure farmers can continue to farm in the future.
\n
\n
1:00 – 2:30: Strengthe
ning community-led food system work – Register Here \nJoin this panel to learn from organizat
ional staff and community leaders on their work to deepen local solutions
to food system problems. Panelists will discuss how they’ve started or cha

how to best implement this approach in your own work. \n

Wednesday\, December 8
\n
\n
10:00
– 12:00: MA Food System policy advocacy: Current campaigns and advocacy s
kill-building – Register Here
\nHear from advocates leading policy campaigns advocating for fu
nding and policy to support Massachusetts’ local food system\, and learn t
he basics of policy advocacy so you can get involved! \n
\n
1:00 – 2:30: Balancing emergency res
ponse and systemic solutions to food insecurity – Register Here \nMost of the work being done
to alleviate hunger comes in the form of emergency food provision\, but mo
re organizations and advocates are emphasizing the need to stop hunger fro
m occurring in the first place. These efforts to develop systemic solution
s to food access integrate issues of systemic racism\, wages\, access to p
ublic benefits\, and local supply chains. This discussion will highlight e
xamples of this work in MA\, and where additional support is needed.
\n
1:00 – 2:30: Expanding
food system education in K-12 schools – Register Here \nThe Collaborative is currently facili
tating a campaign to expand food system education in K-12 schools in MA. T
hese three panelists will demonstrate how food can be integrated into scie
nce\, wellness\, and social studies classes through hands-on lessons that
prepare students to be healthy\, engaged community members with an underst
anding of nutrition\, agriculture\, food justice\, and culinary skills. Ed
ucators will talk about what has helped them to implement these programs a
s well as what else is needed to make sure all students have access to thi
s type of information. And we’ll talk about how advocates can support this
work.
Join us Sunday\, December 5th for the Plymout

Over the past two decades\, human activity has significantly degra
ded the integrity of pollination systems across New England\, with many of
our historically abundant native flowing plant and pollinator species now
locally extinct and others soon to follow if do not take immediate conser
vation action. The loss of plant-pollinator systems poses a significant th
reat to the diversity and functioning of natural ecosystems due to the fun
damental role that ‘pollination products’ play in supporting wildlife acro
ss trophic levels. However\, we currently lack the ecological data needed
to develop effective conservation and restoration strategies for pollinati
on systems at risk. In this talk\, I will discuss how my Beecology citizen
science project at UMASS Dartmouth is utilizing conservation-focused comm
unity members throughout New England to crowdsource the collection and the
implementation of research data to restore imperiled native plant-pollina
tor systems. I will also highlight the Beecology ‘eco-technology’ that we
have developed with WPI collaborators to aid in the collection\, storage\,
visualization and communication of species-level ecological data on plant
-pollinator systems. My talk will conclude with examples of how Beecology
has significantly advanced bumblebee pollination system conservation effor
ts over the past 2 years.
