Born during the COVID pandemic, Brewery 44, located directly off Route 44 in Carver, is an authentic farmhouse-style brewery. Mike Johnson, the proprietor, indicated that he was “looking for a new opportunity” and “purchased some homebrew equipment.” He started brewing and giving the beers away at the Upland Sportsman’s Club in Plympton. After gaining a little experience, Mike bought some large-scale commercial equipment from a now-defunct brewery in Worcester and started Brewery 44.

For a microbrewery heading into its third year, Brewery 44 has developed an impressive number of collaborations with other local breweries, distilleries, farms, food trucks, and organizations that endeavor to support veterans.

Pope’s Point India Pale Ale (IPA, 6.7 ABV)

Pope’s Point IPA is brewed in collaboration with a new brewery in Kingston, Forty Second Brew Company, located on Summer Street. (When Forty Second started out, Brewery 44 helped them out by letting them use their brewery equipment. They used this same approach for Sour Not Sorry beer.) The beer’s name celebrates Carver’s history. The Pope’s Point Furnace was constructed in the early 1700s to process the rich iron ore from local swamps, which were made into tools and cooking implements.

The beer pours nicely and is a hazy white because of the Belgian yeast—it looks almost like an Allagash White. Warrior hops from the Pacific Northwest region give the beer a nice bitterness and crispy finish.
