Spring 2025

Hitting the trifecta. Vicente’s opened its third supermarket, this time in New Bedford. Other locations include Brockton and Pawtucket. Owned by the Cape Verdean Barbosa brothers, Vicente’s was founded in 1994 by their father, Manuel. New Bedford can now “eat around the world” with all the products Vicente’s has to offer. The supermarket is also next to a food desert, so its opening brings healthy, wholesome food to neighborhoods that have been underserved. Mui Bun!!

🐝 Get stoked!! Stoked Pizza has opened a third location, this one in Cohasset. They have partnered with Wareham’s Lillibet Farms as its source for organic tomatoes and basil in the summer. In addition, and quite fascinating, the company brought seeds from Italy’s Campania region for Lillibet to grow and harvest them. That is old world to new world sustainability in action!!

🐝 Win some and win some. Every time you read a new weekly or monthly edition of our eSEMA’s Tidings, you can enter a random drawing with some fabulous giveaways. So far, eSEMA has given away approximately $5,000 in free products and gift cards. Not reading or aware of Tidings? Go to EdibleSEMA.com/tidings/ to learn more. Don’t wait, go now!

🐝 Historic O’Neil Farm is proud to announce that local resident Elaine Philbrick is its new tenant farmer, succeeding Carl O’Neil. A new grade-A-licensed barn will have a dairy milking parlor as well as a commercial kitchen for cheesemaking, specifically goat cheese, marketed under the name Duxbury Creamery. Let’s have a warm welcome for Elaine and her goats, too.

🐝 Keep on Truckin’… Forty members of the South Shore Food Truck Association congregated recently to get their food trucks inspected by up to 30 municipalities in the region at the same time! Massachusetts is one of the only states in the country that does not offer a statewide health inspection certification—it must be done town by town. This is a win-win for food truck owners and municipal health inspectors.

🐝 Rock on!! In October 2024, Fox Rock Farm in Kingston purchased the 56-acre Jones River Farm. Of these, 26 acres constitute 13 farmable cranberry bogs. This is great news for keeping the native fruit in our own backyard and helps sustain farming eff orts and the growth of one of the most iconic members of our area’s produce family.

🐝 Chow Mein sandwiches are back! For those of you already missing Mee Sum, Christopher’s is happy to announce that Kenny Mark is ready to get back into the kitchen. Once a week, Christopher’s will feature the former Mee Sum’s famous and mouth-watering chow mein sandwich at its brand-new second Fall River location at 99 South Main Street, aka the historic A.J. Borden Building.

🐝 Colchester Farms, known for its outdoor farm stand and pick-your-own flowers, has finished its conversion of a barn into a welcoming haven to hold events. The converted barn offers a “cozy” venue that can accommodate small private parties (with or without music), cultural workshops, and classes. Located in Plympton, add Colchester Farms to your list when thinking about possible venues.

🐝 Fowl Play Farm is giving back to the community. Partnering with the Duxbury POST Transitions program that helps 18- to 21-year-olds with special needs learn skills that help them become more independent. Every Tuesday, six or so friends, along with their mentors/instructors, arrive at the DeLorenzo Farm Property and help with “planting garlic, preparing planting beds and pathways, feeding livestock and learning about farm life.”

🐝 Customers helping customers. Coffee Milano in Middleborough is offering a little kindness to its customers. Aptly named “Coffee & Kindness,” the program offers a solution for customers who may be short on funds but want some good food and great coffee. Customers can buy a meal or drink for someone by putting a Post-it offering on the restaurant’s board. If need be, grab a Post-it and enjoy—judgement free. Kindness goes a long way.

🐝 Winner Winner Chicken Lunch? Yelp has awarded the best sandwich shops in every state, and Mae’s Sandwich Shop on Ocean Street in Marshfield is number one in Massachusetts. Yelp “identified businesses in the ‘Sandwiches’ category with a large concentration of reviews mentioning ‘sandwiches,’ then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including geographic location and the volume and ratings of reviews mentioning the keyword.” Celebrating Mae Day early this year.

🐝 Farm & Coast in Dartmouth has purchased an abutting property. Once the renovation is completed, you’ll have a lot more Farm & Coast to enjoy. The owners say not to fret if it looks like it’s getting smaller first—it’s all part of the overall plan. With the expansion comes a more dedicated dining area to nosh on Farm & Coast’s tasty offerings. We can’t wait!!
