Black Hat Brew Works opened its doors in 2015 in the middle of the Scotland Boulevard industrial park in Bridgewater. Paul Mulcahy and his brother Scott first started homebrewing out of a shed in Norton. Time passed, experience was gained, better equipment was purchased, and the rest is history.
An Eagle Scout, Paul came from a community of civic-minded people. “Helping out youth soccer, raising money for the food pantry, and supporting our local first responders are what is important to me, and what truly matters,” he shares.
First Responders Day & Bridgewater Blond (Ale, 6.5% ABV)
Town River Landing, a park in Bridgewater, had become destitute over the years. Paul (with his can-do attitude) and the Fire for Effect Foundation met with Town Officers and the Economic Development Team. They proposed revitalizing the park for future important town events, as well as making it a permanent site for the newly proposed First Responders Day—a celebration of the community’s police, fire fighters, EMTs, nurses, and any person that is considered a first responder. The event would also bring in local musicians, booths for local artisans, and beer and food from local breweries, restaurants, and farms.
The town approved the plan. Paul and several volunteers cut back brush and trees, collected and disposed of trash, planted new grass, and completely revamped the space. Even further, Paul and the team successfully pushed for the town to officially designate the last Saturday in April as First Responders Day with this spring marking the 2nd Annual First Responders Day on Saturday, April 27, 2024.
It is amazing what beer can do for a community—in this case, the Bridgewater Blonde Ale, which embodies the character of the community of Bridgewater all working together in unison, analogous to the cohesive elements of the beer itself—alone, it is just water, yeast, barley, and hops. Together, they transform into something magical—just like the town of Bridgewater, constantly pursuing positive change in the community.
