Seeing the Northern Lights? Experiencing a total eclipse? Climbing Kilimanjaro? Roasting a pig? Say what? All of these are bucket list items for some or many depending on the activity. What would you like to accomplish in your life, what contributions would you like to make, and what kind of fun can you have that soothes the soul?
Just like the ocean, bucket lists ebb and flow based upon what we want to accomplish and our ever-changing goals and dreams. Until I get a new hip, every mountain is in fact “high enough.” Kilimanjaro remains elusive, so for today maybe I’ll let my taste buds take the lead and try something new, exotic; something I’ve thought about eating, but haven’t had the nerve… like participating in a hot sauce taste-testing competition or creating a tantalizing octopus ceviche, maybe partaking in a multi-onion flatbread dare or even attempting a sensational pig roast. And when in need of more delectables, diving into Big Heart Little Stove will unearth new signature dishes to amaze and nourish my friends and family. We explore all these hot gastronomic endeavors in this issue.
We also visit a noble retiring farmer whose bucket list includes finding a replacement in a like-minded aggie who is equally committed to the safekeeping of an historic farm. And we learn why the South Coast is great for producing specific types of wine as we talk with local vintners and travel part of the Coastal Wine Trail.
So many options from which to choose. Now, I’m going back to the kitchen to finish off my bucket list dessert for the summer, a Hazelnut Chocolate Sea Salt Mousse.
Dream big! Let your imagination flow this season and beyond, challenging yourself and having some bucket list fun. It doesn’t all have to be grueling to be fulfilling. Cheers to Summer 2024!
