Some of my favorite local foods are ordered through a window in a shack. At the top of my list are fried clams in the summer (and apple cider donuts in the fall). We are fortunate to live in an area with an abundance of fresh seafood, and summer is a special time to enjoy our bounty. There’s nothing like sitting by the ocean, breathing in salty air while you enjoy fresh seafood that’s perfectly breaded and fried to just the right golden shade—crispy on the outside, tender inside, and not greasy.
This small sampling of clam shacks around the area meets the criteria of being a shack-like structure by the water that offers made-to-order fried seafood and is open seasonally. They’re the type of clam shacks that hold special places in our memories and that we long to visit again. Of course, great seafood can be found inland, too. That’s one of the fun things about Massachusetts—you never know where you’ll find amazing fried clams.
