“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.”
-Jawaharal Nehru
Adventures can be found around the corner and around the world, yours for the taking! Whether it is along the shores of the Atlantic, or across the pond in far-away lands, or in your own backyard, it’s time to brush off your traveling shoes and go exploring.
Exploration can come in the form of a road trip to a quaint coastal town for a lobster dinner, a quest to Paris for the perfect loaf of bread, or jaunts to local markets that embrace culinary diversity; but you can also learn to grow and eat something new, discover how cuisines are influenced by different and sometimes merging cultures, or come upon a little ‘gem’ a stone’s throw from your abode that becomes a family favorite. Getting out of our comfort zone and doing a little adventuring is good for the mind and soul. It inspires, opens our eyes, expands our palettes, and introduces us to new friends and cultures. The rewards are memories of tastes, sights, and smells that make us weak in the knees, and the people we meet along the way who capture our hearts.
Summertime in southeastern Massachusetts provides boundless opportunities where many day trip excursions are close at hand. Whether in Plymouth or Bristol County: the ocean and its coves, the many working farms, and the smaller urban areas all offer an abundance of experiences to satisfy anyone’s and everyone’s appetite. For those who want to venture farther afield, we’ve included culinary musings (and recipes) on excursions to Paris and Mozambique, and a review of an international cookbook offering ‘round the world’ recipes that will have you globetrotting every week from the friendly confines of your own kitchen.
As you now might have guessed, this issue focuses on our writers’ adventures, sharing their memorable moments. The stories, recipes, and reviews are meant to encourage, invigorate, and inspire, and we hope they will help serve as your guide on some novel expeditions that will sate your desire for adventure this summer.
We also invite you to share your adventures with us: whether you journey to destinations from this issue, exciting new locales, or explorations within your own kitchen— tell us about them on our Facebook page or email Laurie@edibleSouthShore.com. Your story could be our inspiration for the second annual excursions edition in summer of 2017! We look forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance for sharing. Until then, happy adventuring!
