Jay Laranjo’s journey into knife-making is a classic tale of turning adversity into opportunity. After a motorcycle accident in 2018 left him sidelined, Jay, a Taunton native, started tinkering in his garage, sparking a passion for crafting knives. What began as a hobby born out of curiosity quickly grew into something more when friends and locals noticed his skill. Requests poured in, and with a nod to his father’s March 14 birthday, Jay founded 314 Forge, a name that carries personal weight.

Along the way, Jay crossed paths with executive chef Andy Teixeira, a James Beard Award nominee and semifinalist. Andy bought one of Jay’s knives and saw the potential. He mentored Jay, guiding him on the specialty blade styles that chefs crave, such as Santoku, Gyuto, and chef’s knives. Now, Andy’s kitchen hums with a full set of Jay’s creations, each one a testament to their collaboration. He also produces a range of “outdoor cutlery” perfect for hunters and campers.

Jay is a one-man operation, working out of his Taunton garage. He swears by German high-carbon steel, which he adamantly claims outshines stainless for its edge and durability. Every knife is a unique, professional, hard-working instrument, built to last and earning heirloom status, but at a “blue-collar price.” Jay’s handles are just as special— locally sourced wood, such as maple, black walnut, mahogany; DymaLux; and other custom materials tailored to a buyer’s taste. He’s hands-on, working directly with customers to craft blades that feel personal, whether for a home cook or a professional chef.
From a single spark of curiosity, Jay has built a thriving craft. His knives aren’t just tools; they’re stories, forged with care and precision. At 314 Forge, Jay Laranjo proves that sometimes the best paths in life are the ones you never planned to take.
